Celebrating a Don’t Sweat Mom:
Sara Youngblood-Ochoa

Don't Sweat Mom

Biggest Challenge of Being a Mom

Sara: Finding enough time for everything that needs to be done — giving my child plenty of attention, cleaning, laundry, work. Oh and let’s not forget I’d like to have some time to spend with my husband too!

Being a Don’t Sweat Mom Means

Sara: Being a Don’t Sweat Moms means learning to breathe and appreciate the small moments instead of always rushing to the next appointment, next assignment, next load of laundry.

A Wish For Other Moms

Sara: Breathe! And remember that every other mom is struggling too. So let’s all stop judging and comparing and instead support each other. There’s strength in numbers!

Sara: Chapter 41: Celebrate Other Mothers

This is a hard one for me. I don’t usually judge other moms, but I look at other moms and judge MYSELF and find myself lacking. Instead I need to celebrate the things other moms are good at and be inspired by it instead of being so hard on myself.

Sara Youngblood-Ochoa is a former actor/director whose latest (and greatest!) role is as mom to her two-year old son. Originally from Texas, she has been in Chicago since July 2008.

Sara and her husband enjoy supporting the arts in the Windy City and chasing after their wiggleworm toddler. In her free time (HA!) Sara is the publisher/editor of Macaroni Kid Chicago, a free online newsletter of all the family-friendly things to do in Chicago.

Slow Down and
Wake Up to your Life

Slow Down and Wake Up to the Wisdom of Your Heart.

What are we really so stressed out about?

Richard said in his book “You Can Be Happy No Matter What:” “Stress is nothing more than a socially accepted form of mental illness.” If stress were real, the same things would trigger each of us and our experience of stress would be universal. As a culture, we have bought into the idea that being busy and especially appearing busy are signs of productivity, and if we appear too relaxed then we are not producing at a competitive rate. We couldn’t be further off the mark, and our frenetic pace of life is not initiating any sort of peace and happiness in our lives nor higher productivity. It is proven that we are most clear and responsive to life when we are calm and centered thus increasing our ability to access creativity and decisive thinking.

If someone told you tomorrow that you had one week to live, do you think you would be immersed in the same thoughts and problems that you perceive today?

Celebrating a Don’t Sweat Mom: Courtney Wigley

Biggest Challenge of Being a Mom

Courtney: My biggest challenge has been the balance of the Mommy, Wife, Individual dance. Finding a way to balance all those things really blindsided me in the beginning. I felt as though I had lost myself. I have learned that Me Time, usually in the morning, is very valuable. It allows me to charge up and face the day with a refreshed attitude.

I am Courtney the chef, housekeeper, nurse, teacher, wife, and million other things, but I am still Courtney. I still want to do things like go to school to be a hair stylist and open a shop with my best friend.

Being a Don’t Sweat Mom Means

Don't Sweat Mom

Courtney: Being a Don’t Sweat Mom means stepping back and taking a look at the big picture. Seeing that the small day to day things aren’t always what matters. To realize that I may not get all the chores done in one day, because it’s better to spend an hour playing with my son than an hour folding laundry. I don’t need to stress about the little stuff. It will get done!

A Wish For Other Moms

Courtney: For one day, write down all the things that you stress about. The small things, the big things, anything that elevates your stress level. At the end of the day take a look at your list. If you’re like me, the majority of those things will be small and trivial. This will help to put your day in perspective. This will help you realize that the only thing that matters is that you are there for your children, that you spent as much time with them as possible, and that you were able to take some “Me time” to recharge and refresh your soul. When you stress less you are able to live more.

Courtney: Gratitude Is a Family Practice, and Begins with You – This chapter is about placing your attention on appreciation. This way of thinking will adjust your whole outlook on life and has really helped me.
